I'd Better Get To Livin'

I watched the "Celebration of Life" for Senator Edward Kennedy for 3 hours. I laughed, cried, and enjoyed every minute. He was an extraordinary man. He was in a plane crash years ago and since then suffered with back pain. I wonder how much arthritis and disc loss he had to suffer though. Whatever his pain level, it never seem to stop him from working, playing, and living his life to the fullest.

Everyone goes through “stuff,” it’s called LIFE! People also go through periods of change, reflection, and challenges. I seem to be doing all three at once lately. l was listening to Josh Groban sing “Don’t Give Up” over and over, then Dolly Parton’s “Better Get to Livin”. Those songs must have triggered something because I decided, “If It’s to be, it’s up to me”.

Here are the words to the Dolly Parton song.

I said you'd better get to livin', givin'
Be willing and forgivin'
Cause all healing has to start with you
You better stop whining, pining
Get your dreams in line
And then just shine, design, refine
Until they come true
And you better get to livin'

Your life's a wreck, your house is mess
And your wardrobe way outdated
All your plans just keep on falling through
Overweight and under paid, underappreciated
I'm no guru, but I'll tell you
This I know is true

You better get to livin', givin'
A little more thought about bein'
A little more willin' to make a better way
Don't sweat the small stuff
Keep your chin up
Just hang tough
And if it gets too rough
Fall on your knees and pray
And do that everyday
Then you'll get to livin'
The day we're born we start to die
Don't waste one minute of this life
Get to livin'

Share your dreams and share your laughter
Make some points for the great hereafter
Better start carin'
Better start sharin'
Better start tryin'
Better start smiling
And you better get to livin'

  1. I've never heard this song -- but I can totally hear Dolly Parton singing it!! It suits her to a T.

Thanks for posting it MissD, it's very inspiring.

I think a huge part of getting to livin' is to focus on what you can do, what you have, and where you're headed. Staying mired in the past or wishing things were different can set off the "whines"! And whiners aren't welcome here :-)
